The Science of Hair Shrinkage
Hair shrinkage occurs when naturally curly or textured hair reverts to its coiled or curly state, making it appear shorter than its actual length. The degree of shrinkage can vary depending on factors such as curl pattern, porosity, and overall hair health. The primary reason for this phenomenon lies in the structure of curly hair.
Curly hair is characterized by a unique spiral structure. The hair shaft is not straight but rather follows a helical path, creating curls and coils. When curly hair is exposed to moisture or humidity, the hydrogen bonds in the hair fibers are affected, causing the strands to contract and return to their natural, coiled state. This process leads to the appearance of shrinkage.
Why Embrace Hair Shrinkage?
While hair shrinkage can sometimes be viewed as an inconvenience, it's essential to recognize that it is a natural and healthy aspect of textured hair. Embracing shrinkage can lead to a more positive and confident relationship with your hair. Here are a few reasons why you should embrace your natural curl pattern and the shrinkage that comes with it:
Managing Hair Shrinkage
While embracing your natural curl pattern is crucial, there are practical ways to manage and minimize shrinkage if you desire. Here are some effective tips:
In the world of natural hair care, understanding and embracing shrinkage is a crucial step towards building a positive relationship with your curls. Recognize that shrinkage is a sign of healthy, well-moisturized hair and a unique feature of your natural texture. By incorporating the right techniques and practices, you can manage and even minimize shrinkage while celebrating the beauty of your naturally textured tresses. Remember, the journey to embracing your natural hair is a personal one, and finding what works best for you is all part of the adventure.

]]>Understanding Hair Porosity
Hair porosity refers to your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. It is determined by the condition of the hair's cuticle layer, which can be categorized into three main types: high, low, and normal porosity. Check out our Glow by Daye Porosity Quiz to learn your hair’s porosity if you haven’t.
- Characteristics: Highly porous hair has raised cuticles, which make it prone to absorbing moisture quickly but also losing it rapidly.
- Common signs: Hair may feel dry, frizzy, and easily tangled.
- Wash Frequency: High porosity hair can benefit from more frequent washing, typically once a week or as needed to maintain moisture.
- Characteristics: Low porosity hair has tightly sealed cuticles, making it resistant to moisture absorption.
- Common signs: Products may sit on the hair's surface, taking longer to absorb. Hair may feel weighed down or greasy if over-washed.
- Wash Frequency: Low porosity hair typically requires less frequent washing, approximately every 1-2 weeks or as needed.
- Characteristics: Normal porosity hair balances high and low porosity, with cuticles that open and close as needed.
- Common signs: Hair easily absorbs and retains moisture without feeling overly dry or greasy.
- Wash Frequency: Normal porosity hair can be washed every 1-2 weeks or as needed to maintain a healthy balance.
Considering Hair Texture
Hair texture refers to the diameter of each strand of hair and can vary from fine to medium to coarse. Your hair's texture also plays a role in determining the ideal wash frequency.
- Characteristics: Fine hair strands are thinner in diameter and tend to be more fragile.
- Wash Frequency: Fine hair may need more frequent washing, as it can become easily weighed down by oils and products. Every 1-2 weeks is a good starting point.
- Characteristics: Medium-textured hair falls between fine and coarse and is generally more versatile.
- Wash Frequency: Medium hair can typically follow the guidelines for normal porosity hair, washing every 1-2 weeks or as needed.
- Characteristics: Coarse hair strands are thicker and more robust.
- Wash Frequency: Coarse hair may require less frequent washing, typically every 2 weeks or as needed to maintain moisture.
Additional Factors to Consider
While hair porosity and texture are essential factors in determining your wash frequency, several additional considerations can help refine your routine:
Developing a Hair Wash Routine
Here's a step-by-step guide to help you develop a wash routine tailored to your hair's porosity and texture:
In conclusion, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to how often you should wash your natural textured hair. It's a highly individualized decision based on your hair's porosity, texture, lifestyle, and environmental factors. By understanding your hair's unique characteristics and listening to its signals, you can develop a wash routine that promotes healthy, beautiful, and well-moisturized natural hair. Remember that experimentation and adaptability are key to finding the perfect wash frequency for your hair type.
]]>5. Master the Twist
Now comes the fun part – twisting! Start at the root of each section and twist all the way down to the ends. The tightness of your twist will influence the final result: tighter twists result in more defined curls, while looser twists create a softer, more natural look.
Consistency is key here. Try to make your twists a similar size and tension throughout your hair for a uniform twist-out.
6. Allow Your Twists to Set
After all your hard work twisting, it's time to let your hair set. You have a couple of options here. You can let your hair air-dry, which is the gentlest method and works great if you can twist and have a good amount of time for it to dry before you take it down. Sometimes this can take quite some time depending on the thickness of your hair and the thickness of the twists. Alternatively, you can use the Glow by Daye Soft Hooded Dryer Attachment with a low heat setting to speed up the process.
If you're patient, leaving your twists in overnight is an excellent way to ensure they set properly. Just make sure they're completely dry before moving on to the next step.
7. Don't Disturb the Twists
While your twists are setting, resist the urge to touch or disturb them too much. This can lead to frizz and disrupt the curl pattern you've worked so hard to create. Let them do their thing!
8. Carefully Unravel the Twists
Once your twists are completely dry, it's time to unveil the magic. Start by applying a small amount of oil or serum to your fingertips to minimize frizz. Gently unravel the twists in the opposite direction they were twisted, separating the hair into smaller sections for added volume.
9. Fluff and Style
With your twists unraveled, it's time to fluff and style your twist-out. Use an Afro pick or a wide-tooth comb to add volume and shape your hair to your desired look. This step is where you can truly make the style your own, so have fun experimenting with different shapes and volumes.
For added hold and to reduce frizz, consider using a light-hold hairspray to set your style in place.
10. Preserve Your Twist-Out
You've put in the effort to create the perfect twist-out, so now it's time to make it last. Use a satin bonnet or satin pillowcase or bonnet to protect your hair while you sleep. This will help maintain the style and reduce friction that can lead to frizz. Glow by Daye Satin Bonnets should be able to allow you to maintain your twist and braid out styles 2x longer than not protecting with anything during the night.
Additionally, you can "pineapple" your hair by loosely gathering it on top of your head and securing it with a satin scrunchie and a Glow by Daye LuxStretch Satin Scarf. This method keeps your curls intact and prevents flattening while you sleep.
11. Maintain Moisture
Even after achieving the perfect twist-out, your hair needs ongoing care to stay healthy and vibrant. Make sure to moisturize your hair regularly with a good-quality leave-in conditioner or moisturizing spray to prevent dryness and frizz.
12. Embrace the Journey
Lastly, remember that achieving the perfect twist-out can be a journey of trial and error. Everyone's hair is unique, so what works for one person might not work for another. Don't be discouraged by setbacks or imperfect results. Embrace the learning process, and with time and practice, you'll master the art of the twist-out.
In conclusion, the perfect twist-out on natural textured hair is a combination of proper preparation, technique, and maintenance. Start with clean, moisturized hair, detangle with care, and choose the right products for your hair type. Section your hair, twist with consistency, and allow your twists to set properly. Once they're dry, carefully unravel them, fluff and style to your liking, and preserve your twist-out for long-lasting beauty. Remember to maintain moisture and enjoy the journey of discovering what works best for your unique hair. With these tips and a little patience, you'll be rocking stunning twist-outs in no time!
1. Nourish from Within with a Balanced Diet
We know, we know, its not sexy or groundbreaking but this would not be too accurate of a list if we didn't include. The foundation for beautiful and healthy hair starts with what you put into your body. A balanced and nutrient-rich diet can significantly impact the growth and overall health of your hair. Foods that are rich in biotin, vitamin E, vitamin A, and omega-3 fatty acids are particularly beneficial for hair growth.
- Biotin: This B-vitamin, also known as vitamin H, is essential for healthy hair, skin, and nails. Foods like eggs, nuts, and whole grains are excellent sources of biotin.
- Vitamin E: An antioxidant, vitamin E promotes healthy blood circulation, which is crucial for delivering nutrients to hair follicles. Incorporate foods like spinach, almonds, and sunflower seeds into your diet.
- Vitamin A: Vitamin A helps in the production of sebum, the natural oil that keeps your scalp moisturized. Sweet potatoes, carrots, and dark leafy greens are rich sources of vitamin A.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fatty fish like salmon and flaxseeds, omega-3 fatty acids contribute to scalp health and prevent hair from becoming brittle.
2. Hydration is Key
Proper hydration is vital for both your body and your hair. Drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day helps to maintain your hair's moisture levels and prevent breakage. Dehydrated hair is more prone to becoming brittle and experiencing damage.
In addition to internal hydration, it's essential to use water-based leave-in conditioners to keep your hair hydrated externally. These products help lock in moisture and create a protective barrier against environmental stressors.
3. Gentle Handling and Protective Styling
Textured hair is delicate and susceptible to breakage, especially when subjected to harsh handling. To minimize manipulation and reduce stress on your strands, consider opting for protective hairstyles such as braids, twists, and updos. These styles not only shield your hair from external factors but also give your hair a break from daily styling routines that can cause friction and damage.
Here we should also mention protection even when not technically styling. Protection against harsh elements such as heat, wind, and even cotton. Cotton absorbs the moisture in your hair that you will need to retain to ensure it stays hydrated and strong from the root to the end. Protect your hair against these harsh elements with a premium scarf, bonnet, or pillowcase.
4. Regular Scalp Massages
Massaging your scalp has multiple benefits for hair growth. Firstly, it increases blood circulation to the hair follicles, ensuring that they receive the necessary nutrients for optimal growth. Secondly, scalp massages help distribute your scalp's natural oils, known as sebum, along the hair shaft. This nourishes and moisturizes your hair, preventing dryness and promoting overall hair health.
To enhance the effects of scalp massages, consider incorporating natural oils such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or castor oil. These oils not only provide additional nourishment but also offer a soothing sensation during your massage. Find the right oil for your hair porosity using the Glow by Daye Blog and/or learn what you hair porosity is by taking the Glow by Daye Porosity Quiz.
5. Trimming and Regular Maintenance
Contrary to the belief that trimming hair slows down growth, regular trims are essential for maintaining healthy hair. Trimming your hair every 8-12 weeks helps to get rid of split ends, which can lead to further damage and breakage if left untreated. By removing split ends, you create a healthier environment for your hair to grow, preventing the splits from traveling up the hair shaft.
6. Choose the Right Hair Care Products
Choosing suitable hair care products is crucial for textured natural hair. Avoid shampoos containing sulfates, as they can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. Opt for sulfate-free shampoos that cleanse your hair without compromising its moisture balance.
Additionally, invest in moisturizing conditioners that provide hydration and nourishment to your hair. Look for deep conditioning treatments that you can use once a week to give your hair an extra boost of moisture and nutrients. Deep conditioning most effectively by applying heat during your session to allow your cuticles to deeply penetrate all the luscious nutrients and benefits of the conditioner. Try using a deep conditioner heat cap if looking for something that will do the job while you are free to move around. If fine with using your portable handheld dryer, you can connect the Soft Hooded Dryer Attachment to it and have an efficient hooded dryer to apply heat.
7. Low Manipulation Styling
Constant manipulation of your hair can lead to breakage and hinder growth. Embrace low manipulation hairstyles that require minimal styling and maintenance. Bantu knots, twist-outs, and braid-outs are great options that allow you to showcase your natural texture while minimizing stress on your hair.
8. Limit Heat Usage
Excessive heat styling can weaken your hair and cause irreversible damage over time. While it's tempting to use flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers for styling, it's best to limit their usage. When heat styling is necessary, use a heat protectant spray to shield your hair from the high temperatures, and always choose the lowest heat setting that achieves the desired result.
9. Get Enough Rest and Manage Stress
The importance of rest and stress management extends beyond your overall well-being – it significantly impacts your hair's health and growth too. Lack of sleep and high stress levels can contribute to hair loss and slow growth. Establish a regular sleep routine and prioritize activities that help you manage stress, such as meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature.
10. Consistent Care and Patience
Growing textured natural hair requires dedication and patience. Consistency in your hair care routine is key to achieving your desired results. Embrace the natural texture of your hair and enjoy the journey towards longer, healthier locks. While it's easy to become impatient, remember that hair growth is a gradual process. Celebrate every milestone along the way, and with time, you'll witness the beautiful transformation of your textured natural hair.
Promoting the growth of your textured natural hair involves adopting a comprehensive approach that encompasses various aspects of your lifestyle and hair care routine. By nourishing your body with the right nutrients, practicing gentle hair care methods, and prioritizing self-care, you can create an environment that encourages healthy hair growth. Embrace your unique texture, and as you implement these tips with patience and dedication, you'll embark on a journey of nurturing and celebrating the beautiful growth of your textured natural hair.

1. Prepping Your Hair
Before diving into the deep conditioning process, it's crucial to prepare your hair properly. Neglecting this step can lead to uneven distribution of the conditioner and hinder the treatment's effectiveness. To start, gently detangle your hair using a wide-toothed comb or your fingers. This will remove any knots or tangles, ensuring that the deep conditioner reaches all parts of your hair. It's essential to handle your hair with care during this process to prevent breakage or unnecessary damage.
Additionally, it's beneficial to dampen your hair slightly before applying the deep conditioner. Of course, usually you will be doing conditioning following a great wash but even after you want your hair to be nice and damp before proceeding to apply your choice of conditioner. This can be done by spritzing your hair with water using a spray bottle. The moisture helps the conditioner spread evenly throughout your strands, maximizing its effectiveness. Remember, do not oversaturate your hair with water, as excessive moisture can dilute the conditioner. As you do it, you will find the right amount where the conditioner will spread very well into the hair.
2. Choosing the Right Conditioner
Selecting the appropriate deep conditioner is key to achieving optimal results. With the myriad of products available, it's important to choose a conditioner specifically formulated for naturally textured hair. Look for products that boast rich, nourishing ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil, aloe vera, or glycerin. These components have excellent moisturizing properties that will quench your hair's thirst.
Avoid conditioners containing harsh chemicals like sulfates or silicones, as they can strip your hair of its natural moisture and cause build-up over time. Opt for sulfate-free and silicone-free products that prioritize hair health. Natural hair tends to be more porous, so opting for a conditioner with a creamy consistency is advantageous, as it will penetrate the hair shaft more effectively.
3. Applying Heat
Heat is a valuable tool when it comes to deep conditioning natural hair. It helps to open the hair cuticles, allowing the deep conditioner to penetrate deeply and provide maximum moisture. After applying the deep conditioner, cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap to create a warm and humid environment. This traps the heat generated by your scalp and enhances the conditioning process.
To further amplify the heat, you can use a heated towel or a hooded dryer. One highly convenient and efficient way, is to use the Glow by Daye Deep Conditioning Heat Cap in which you place in the microwave to heat it for a couple of minutes and it will emit 20-30 minutes of portable heat. Another easy option is to sit under the Glow by Daye Soft Hooded Dryer on low to medium heat for 15-30 minutes. The heat will facilitate better absorption of the conditioner, leaving your hair feeling softer, smoother, and well-nourished.
4. Timing the Treatment
Timing plays a vital role in the deep conditioning process. While it's tempting to rush through this step, allowing sufficient time for the treatment to work its magic is crucial. Follow the instructions provided by the deep conditioner manufacturer, as different products may have varying recommended durations.
As a general guideline, aim for a deep conditioning treatment of 20-30 minutes. This timeframe allows the conditioner to deeply penetrate your hair, providing the necessary moisture and nutrients. Some individuals prefer overnight deep conditioning treatments for an intense moisture boost. However, it is important to exercise caution when leaving products in your hair for extended periods regularly, as it can lead to product buildup and potentially weigh your hair down.
5. Rinse and Seal
After the deep conditioning treatment, it's important to rinse your hair thoroughly to remove any excess product while retaining the moisture and benefits gained from the treatment. Use lukewarm water to rinse your hair, as hot water can strip away the moisture you've just infused.
Once your hair is rinsed, it's time to seal in the moisture. Apply a leave-in conditioner or a natural oil such as argan oil, jojoba oil, or grapeseed oil. These oils act as a barrier, sealing the moisture within your hair and preventing it from escaping. They also provide additional nourishment and protection. Take a small amount of the leave-in conditioner or oil and distribute it evenly throughout your hair, focusing on the ends, which tend to be drier. Avoid applying too much product, as this can weigh your hair down.
Deep conditioning natural hair is essential for maintaining moisture balance and promoting healthy tresses. By following these five effective methods, you can optimize the deep conditioning process, ensuring your hair receives the maximum moisture injection it needs. Remember to prep your hair, choose the right conditioner, apply heat strategically, time the treatment appropriately, and rinse and seal your hair effectively. With consistent deep conditioning, you can transform your natural textured hair, enhancing its overall health and achieving the beautiful, luscious locks you've always desired. Embrace your natural hair journey, and let deep conditioning be your ally in attaining vibrant, moisturized, and healthy hair.

]]>With the arrival of summer, maintaining moisture in your natural hair becomes even more crucial. The combination of heat, humidity, and sun exposure can leave your locks feeling dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. However, by understanding your hair's porosity level and implementing the right strategies, you can keep your hair hydrated, healthy, and beautiful all summer long. If you looking to make sure your hair keeps its optimal moisture levels, let's explore effective tips and suggestions to maintain moisture based on different hair porosities.
Just in case you are new here or new to the term "hair porosity" let's take a pit stop and briefly describe what it is and why it is important to your hair's overall health. Hair porosity refers to your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. It is determined by the condition of your hair's cuticles, which are the outermost layer of each strand. There are three main porosity levels: low, medium, and high. If you don't know your porosity, check out our simple online quiz to get you started.
Tips for Low Porosity Hair:
Tips for Medium Porosity Hair:
Tips for High Porosity Hair:
No matter your porosity, making sure to never overwhelm your strands is key whether in the sun, with a protective style in for too long, or product build up. Particularly in textured hair moisture retention can be very challenging due to its tighter curl or coil pattern so once you have deeply conditioned and moisturized, it will be critical to protect from harsh elements that are in our everyday but can soak all your well intended added moisture from your cuticles. Make sure to lay on fabric that helps retain moisture such as satin lined caps, satin or silk pillowcases, or satin scarves/bonnets.
]]>Are you tired of using the wrong hair care products and not seeing the results you want? Building a hair care regimen based on your hair porosity can help you achieve healthy, beautiful hair that you can be proud of. In this blog, we’ll break down the steps to determine your hair porosity and build a customized hair care regimen that works for you.
Step 1: Determine Your Hair Porosity
Before you can build your personalized hair care regimen, you need to determine your hair porosity. Hair porosity refers to how well your hair can absorb and retain moisture. There are three levels of hair porosity: low, high, and normal. Knowing your porosity level will help you choose the right hair care products and techniques to help your hair look its best.
There are two common methods for testing hair porosity: the float test and our quiz on the website. For the float test, place a few strands of clean, dry hair in a bowl of water. Observe whether they float or sink after 2-4 minutes. If your hair floats, you have low porosity hair. If it sinks, you have high porosity hair. If it sinks and then rises to the top, you have normal porosity hair. Alternatively, you can take our quiz on the website to determine your hair porosity level.
Step 2: Build Your Hair Care Regimen
Now that you know your hair porosity level, it’s time to build your customized hair care regimen. Here are some tips and sample regimens for each porosity level:
A. Low Porosity Hair
If you have low porosity hair, your hair cuticles are tightly packed, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate your hair shaft. Use lightweight, water-based products to avoid buildup. Apply heat while deep conditioning to help open the cuticle and let moisture in. Use protein treatments sparingly to avoid protein overload.
Sample Regimen:
B. High Porosity Hair
If you have high porosity hair, your hair cuticles are widely spaced, making it easy for moisture to escape. Use heavier, moisturizing products to help retain moisture. Use protein treatments regularly to strengthen hair. Seal in moisture with heavier oils and butters.
Sample Regimen:
C. Normal Porosity Hair
If you have normal porosity hair, your hair can both absorb and retain moisture well, so you can use a balanced approach to hair care. Maintain a healthy balance of moisture and protein in your routine.
Sample Regimen:
Step 3: Maintain Your Healthy Hair
Step 3: Maintain Your Healthy Hair Regimen
After building a customized hair care regimen based on your hair porosity level, the most important step is to maintain it consistently. It takes time to see noticeable improvements in your hair's health and appearance, so be patient and stick to your routine. Here are some tips to help you maintain your healthy hair regimen:
Wash and condition your hair regularly: how often you should wash and condition your hair depends on your hair type and texture. Make sure to use products that are appropriate for your hair porosity level and avoid using products that contain harsh chemicals that can strip your hair of its natural oils.
Protect your hair while you sleep: use a satin or silk bonnet or scarf to protect your hair while you sleep. This will help prevent your hair from becoming dry and damaged due to friction with your pillowcase.
Trim your hair regularly: trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks helps to prevent split ends and breakage. Make sure to trim only what's necessary to keep your hair healthy and avoid over-trimming, which can lead to hair loss.
Pay attention to how your hair reacts to products: not all products work for everyone. Pay attention to how your hair reacts to different products and adjust your routine accordingly. If a product is causing dryness or breakage, discontinue use and try something else.
Protect your hair from heat: heat styling tools can cause damage to your hair, so use them sparingly. If you must use heat, use a heat protectant and a lower heat setting to minimize damage.
Remember, your hair is unique, and so is your perfect hair care regimen. By understanding your hair's porosity and building a routine around it, you're on your way to achieving the healthy, beautiful hair you deserve. Consistency and patience are key, so stick to your routine and be gentle with your hair. With time and care, you'll see the results you want and be proud of the hair you have!
]]>Silk presses are a great way to achieve sleek, smooth, and shiny hair without the use of chemicals. But, with the summer heat and humidity, it can be challenging to maintain that silky look for long. Here are three fool-proof ways to preserve your silk press and keep your hair looking fabulous for longer.
Wrap Your Hair at Night. One of the most effective ways to preserve your silk press is to wrap your hair at night. Wrapping your hair at night with a helps to protect it from frizz and breakage caused by friction against your pillowcase. Cover your hair with a satin scarf or bonnet to keep it in place and protect it from moisture.
Avoid Water and Humidity Water. and humidity are two of the biggest enemies of a silk press. To keep your hair looking silky and smooth, it's essential to avoid getting it wet as much as possible. If you must go outside on a humid day, wear a hat or use an umbrella to protect your hair from moisture. If you do get caught in the rain, use a microfiber towel or t-shirt to gently blot your hair dry instead of rubbing it, which can cause frizz. Use a satin-lined shower cap to avoid in-shower frizz.
Use the Right Products. Using the right products is essential for preserving your silk press. Look for products that are designed to smooth and protect the hair, such as a heat protectant spray and a serum or oil to add shine and reduce frizz. Avoid using heavy styling products that can weigh down your hair and cause it to lose its silkiness. Stick to lightweight, moisturizing products that nourish your hair without weighing it down.
Don't Overdo It with Heat Styling. While silk presses are a great way to achieve straight, shiny hair, it's important not to overdo it with heat styling. Using too much heat can damage your hair and cause it to lose its silkiness. To avoid damaging your hair, use a heat protectant spray before using any heat styling tools and always use the lowest possible heat setting that achieves the desired results. Additionally, try to limit your heat styling to no more than once or twice a week.
Touch Up with a Flat Iron. If your silk press starts to lose its smoothness, don't panic. You can easily touch it up with a flat iron. However, it's important to use the flat iron sparingly and to be gentle with your hair. Avoid using high heat settings and pulling or tugging on your hair, which can cause breakage and damage.
Deep Condition Regularly. Deep conditioning treatments are essential for maintaining healthy, silky hair. Deep conditioning treatments help to restore moisture and nutrients to your hair, which can help to extend the life of your silk press. You can use a deep conditioning treatment once a week or as needed to keep your hair looking its best.
Maintaining a silk press requires some effort, but the results are worth it. By following these fool-proof tips, you can keep your hair looking sleek, smooth, and shiny for longer, even in the summer heat and humidity. Remember to wrap your hair at night, avoid water and humidity, use the right products, and be gentle with your hair. With a little bit of care and attention, your silk press can last for weeks, leaving you with gorgeous, silky hair all summer long.

In this blog post, we'll explore the three most common reasons your curls may not be defined and provide tips and tricks for achieving perfect curls.
One of the most common reasons for undefined curls is product buildup. Over time, product residue can accumulate on your hair, weighing it down and making it look limp and lifeless. This buildup can be caused by a variety of factors, including using too much product or using products that are not suited to your hair type.
To combat product buildup and achieve defined curls, it's essential to start with a clean slate. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup on your hair. You can also try using a gentle cleansing conditioner or co-wash to keep your hair clean without stripping it of its natural oils.
Once your hair is clean, choose products that are specifically designed for your hair type. If you have fine hair, choose lightweight products that won't weigh down your curls. If you have thick or coarse hair, opt for richer products that will help define and moisturize your curls.
Curly hair can sometimes become dry and a lack of moisture can cause your curls to become frizzy and undefined. If your curls are not as defined as you'd like, it's possible that your hair is dehydrated and in need of some extra moisture.
To combat dryness and achieve defined curls, it's important to incorporate deep conditioning treatments into your hair care routine. Use a deep conditioner to provide your curls with the moisture they need to look their best. Add a heat cap for additional benefits! You can also try using a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair moisturized throughout the day.
Another way to keep your curls moisturized is to use a satin bonnet or silk pillowcase while you sleep. These materials help to reduce friction and prevent your curls from becoming tangled and frizzy.
The way you style your hair can have a significant impact on the definition of your curls. If your curls are not defined, it's possible that you are using the wrong styling techniques or using too much heat.
To achieve defined curls, it's essential to use gentle styling techniques that won't damage your hair. Avoid using heat styling tools as much as possible, as these can cause your curls to become frizzy and damaged. If you do need to use heat, be sure to use a heat protectant spray to minimize damage.
When styling your curls, it's important to use a light touch. Avoid brushing or combing your hair, as this can cause your curls to become frizzy and undefined. Instead, use your fingers to separate your curls and apply styling products.
Another tip for achieving defined curls is to use a diffuser when blow-drying your hair. A diffuser helps to evenly distribute heat and airflow, helping to define your curls and prevent frizz.
Achieving defined curls takes time and effort, but with the right products and techniques, it's possible to achieve the perfect curls you've always wanted. Start by removing any product buildup and choosing products that are specifically designed for your hair type. Incorporate deep conditioning treatments into your hair care routine to keep your curls moisturized, and use gentle styling techniques to avoid damaging your hair. With these tips, you'll be able to achieve defined curls that are healthy, shiny, and beautiful.

]]>Protective styling is a great way to give your hair a break from daily manipulation and heat styling. However, many people make mistakes when it comes to protective styling that can actually do more harm than good. Here are three common mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Failing to prepare your hair before protective styling is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Your hair needs to be in the best possible condition before it's put up in a style that will keep it hidden for several weeks. Neglecting this step can lead to dry, brittle hair that's more prone to breakage and damage.
Here's what you should do to prepare your hair before protective styling:
Deep condition: Treat your hair to a deep conditioning treatment to nourish and hydrate your strands. This will help keep your hair strong and healthy during your protective style.
Detangle: Detangle your hair thoroughly to prevent knots and tangles from forming. This will make it easier to style your hair and will help prevent breakage.
Moisturize: Make sure your hair is well moisturized before you put it up. This will help prevent dryness and breakage during your protective style.
2. Neglecting to maintain your protective style properly can lead to damage and breakage, negating the benefits of protective styling. It's important to keep your scalp moisturized, avoid tight hairstyles that can cause traction alopecia, and avoid excessive product build-up. Here's what you should keep in mind to maintain your protective style properly:
Moisturize your scalp: Keep your scalp moisturized to prevent dryness and itching. This can be done by using a light oil or leave-in conditioner.
Avoid tight hairstyles: Hairstyles that are too tight can cause traction alopecia, a condition where hair is pulled out from the roots. Make sure your protective style is not too tight, and avoid styles that put too much tension on your hair.
Avoid excessive product build-up: Product build-up can lead to clogged pores, breakage, and other problems. Avoid using too many products, and make sure to wash your hair regularly to remove any build-up.
Monitor your hair regularly: Check your hair regularly to make sure it's not becoming dry or matted. If you notice any problems, take steps to address them before they become more serious.
3. Leaving your protective style in for too long can lead to damage and breakage. It's important to remove your style within the recommended timeframe, usually every 4-6 weeks, and give your hair a break before starting a new protective style. Here's what you should keep in mind to avoid leaving your protective style in for too long:
Set a timeline: Make a note of when you first put your hair up in a protective style, and set a reminder for when it's time to take it down. This will help you avoid leaving it in for too long.
Be gentle: When removing your protective style, be gentle to avoid tangles and knots. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to carefully detangle your hair.
Give your hair a break: After removing your protective style, give your hair a break before putting it up in another style. This will allow your hair to rest and recover, reducing the risk of damage and breakage.
By avoiding these common protective styling mistakes, you can ensure that your hair remains healthy, strong, and beautiful. So go ahead and enjoy the benefits of protective styling, but make sure to do it right!

Madam C.J. Walker
We wouldn't have a lot of what we do today in the world of hair if it wasn't for the Queen of entrepreneurialism herself. Born Sarah Breedlove in 1967, Madam C.J. Walker was like many African American women at the time and was in constant search for quality hair solutions that met the needs of curls and coils alike. With limited options available for Black women, it was difficult to treat hair that had texture. When she became fed up with the lack of products made for Black hair, she took matters into her own hands and formulated products from scratch. After selling door to door with the help of her husband and daughter, Madam C.J. Walker expanded her clientele, and it grew into the birth of the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. This was the first company to introduce a haircare system that contained everything a woman needed to manage her crown accordingly.
The "Walker System" included a scalp preparation of shampoo, a pomade for moisture, and hot iron for styling. While this wasn't your typical l.o.c routine, it was a method that provided Black women with beautiful, strong hair that they adored. A true wizard in the business realm, Madam C.J. Walker's brand was excelling in all areas and even formed partnerships with local drug stores. At the height of her career in 1919, she was considered the wealthiest self-made woman in the country. Even after her death, products continued to succeed around the country and even in neighboring countries such as Cuba, Jamaica, Panama, and Costa Rica. While her daughter A'lelia continued running the business, her mother, C.J. Walker, was undoubtedly an inspiration for people to start their own businesses and create solutions for Black women in haircare.
Natural Hair Movement
As the Black community continued their fight in society, men and women began embracing a natural look that symbolized African Americans from root to tip. The Civil Rights Movement brought the rise of the natural movement as well and encouraged men and women in the 1960s and '70s to accept their coils and curls and move away from any manipulations. Following their message of Black Power, the European standards did not align with their mission. Impactful statements from popular icons like Angela Davis and Diana Ross were made not only made from what they said but by saying them in their afro hairstyles. Men such as Jimi Hendrix were also making an influence towards natural hair in the form of activism. Unfortunately, these hairstyles faced backlash for decades to come and were often deemed unprofessional. It would be many years later before laws were passed to prevent people from discriminating against Black women and men for their hair. Still, this movement made an important impact on the community and provided a look that swept the disco generation.
Wigs
The history of wigs can date back to Ancient Egypt, where Egyptians shaved their heads to alleviate excessive heat from the desert sun. In order to keep up appearances, women would use wigs. Although the wigs would vary from different classes, it was very common for everyone to wear them. While the Black women's relationship with wigs began in Egypt, it certainly has evolved and has since been embraced in the industry to create fun, new looks. The versatility has enabled Black women to change up their styles and protect their natural hair simultaneously.
As an even deeper way to show love and respect to our natural hair, wigs have provided a way to showcase the African American culture without having to spend excessive time on one style. These days, wigs can range from curly to coily, and some would even be braided or in locs. It's a statement that announces Black beauty in a multifaceted approach that makes Black women feel even more confident.
Weaves
After various decades of different hair trends, the hair industry was evolving to new heights but still not quite what we see today. While Black women took to the streets to mobilize against discrimination, hairstyles that could be manipulated into various looks were very popular. With additions such as curls and wigs being incorporated, there still wasn't a technique that included both natural hair and synthetic tracks. An avid experimentalist when it came to hair, Christina Jenkins landed on something truly unique when she developed a way to attach both synthetic hair and the natural hair together for a transformational style.
This outstanding technique allowed women, especially Black women, to manipulate their hair freely and enjoy multiple looks. The concept of interweaving different hair together for one hairstyle was the ultimate game-changing in hair history, and in May of 1951, the 'Hair-Weeve' filed for her intention to be patented. After her initial success, Jenkins began teaching her methods to stylists and even opened her own store, the HairWeeve Penthouse Salon. Jenkins's hair weaving technique swept the hair world and continues to be a prominent demand, even becoming its own hair extension industry. As a significant contributor to Black hair, Christina Jenkins helped to catapult the trajectory for the Black community when it comes to hair trends for generations to come.
Braids
The history of braids started off as a sign of marital status, age, religion, wealth, and more within West African cultures. The oldest image of a woman with braids was even discovered along the Nile River. As a connection to their creator and ancestors on earth, braids continued to be a style that was used in Black culture for a generation. While the evolution of braids has changed in terms of expression, the pattern has stayed the same. Compared to other hairstyles, braiding is more of an artistic technique that has a unique form and requires skill and talent. It's also specifically meant for textured hair.
Although these hairstyles were subjected to harsh criticism, it didn't stop non-black groups from adopting them as their own, often showing a lack of understanding for the rich history of braids, curls, and locs. When T.V Personality Kim Kardashian wore cornrows in 2018, she narrowly made reference to a hairstyle worn by a white actress in a 1979 film. Men and women outside the black community were praised for their new and trendy looks, which, unknowingly or not, appropriated black culture. By honoring Black women in the hair industry, society should allow women to not only choose their outlets but celebrate in every facet. From long straight wigs to coily, fros, and natural curls, Black women deserve to be celebrated for unraveled innovation and creativity.

As the winter months come with some of the most wonderful times of the year, such as the holidays and beautiful snowy scenery, your hair may have other reactions to the cold temperatures. The frigid winds and dry air tend to suck the moisture right off your curls and leave you helpless every year trying to inject by any means necessary. In addition to the intense dryness, it can be challenging just to stay warm in general with your many layers of cozy hats, scarfs, cotton wraps, ear muffs, and anything else you can find to keep your head heated from the cold weather. While it may keep you from freezing, these additional layers can cause a ton of friction on your head, drying out your hair even faster than decreasing temperatures. In great Glow by Daye fashion, we are here to keep it simple for you and break down some easy-to-remember tips to get you through the upcoming season. Each suggestion is meant to help retain your moisture, reduce breakage, and continue your healthier hair journey by preserving each strand and giving you a head start on a summer strength check-in.
Keep in mind these imperative winter hair maintenance tips as soon as you feel a change in the air. It will make a world of difference in not only how you approach these colder months but also allows you to enjoy the new season without having to hesitate if your hair is getting the treatment it needs to flourish. Each suggestion is made to preserve your mane and keep it strong, healthy, and continue to thrive at any temperature. Keep in mind, they all go hand and hand, and working on one will inevitably help the others in some way.
Reduce Breakage
Before making any sudden changes to your hair care routine, it's helpful to understand why hair becomes more brittle during winter in the first place. The thirst is real when it comes to hydrating your curls, so don't be afraid to pile on the conditioner. When searching for the right conditioner, you want to see how well your hair can detangle and if it glides right in with each stroke. If you feel your hair is brittle and still unmanageable, it might be time to switch it up. This also rings true for oil treatments depending on what your hair is craving the most. It's suggested that to restore your hair, a deep condition is needed at least weekly to see optimal results.
We recommend our Deep Conditioning Heat Cap for low porosity hair.
Grape Deep Conditioning Heat Cap - $36.96
Avoid Flat Irons
Any continuous exposure to intense cold or heat can damage your hair. Moisture is what helps keep your strands nourished and elastic. When you use heat like flat iron, it usually prevents the development of your hair's natural oils. Over-applying heat to your hair when it is already dried causes brittleness, breakage, dullness, and dryness to the point where hair is stripped of its natural moisture. This can cause your cuticles to dry and snap off. Use a hooded dryer to gently dry hair or air drying whenever possible is ideal. While it may take a little longer to dry or obtain your desired style, it's the healthiest way to dry your hair without the emphasis on heat and possible damage.
Protective Styling
Protective styling helps keep in moisture and stops your hair from any further damage caused by styling and your environment. Protective styles are not only a great way to give your curls a nice break, but they are also perfect for reinventing your look. We do so much each day, and our many activities can create stress for our hair. Whether you want to put your hair into twists for the week or detangle for a nice forming bun, find a protective style that works for you. Consider that work great for you. Keep in mind to not leave them in for too long (6-8 weeks depending on the style), care for your scalp and hair while they are in style as best as possible, and keep it gentle on your edges and sensitive areas of your head.
Deep Condition
Performing regular deep conditioning treatments is incredibly important to aid in retaining length as well as helping with moisture levels. Applied every wash day if possible, this treatment is perfect for those who may notice that their hair isn't holding its moisture like it used to or that you have excessive frizz that can't be controlled. An adequate deep conditioner can help to replenish the nutrients and moisture that strands tend to lose on a constant basis. This helps to reconnect the protein chains inside the hair to strengthen each strand. These treatments need to be applied with heat to penetrate into the hair's inner layer. Tip: you can use a hooded dryer attachment or heat cap for this.
Hair Steaming
As a level up from a common deep condition process, steaming your hair has a lot of benefits that you may have never realized you needed to keep your hair in tip-top shape. While both deep conditioning and steaming are fantastic for maintenance, steaming has an important element that helps your strands go into overdrive. Steaming your hair provides the best of both worlds by using heat and moisture to activate the hair follicles and open the cuticles to allow deeper penetration for product application. From 3a to 4c and everything in between, implementing a steaming treatment makes a huge difference, and the results will have you hooked.
Satin and Silk Only!
Incorporating satin and silk in your routine helps to keep the curls and coils safe from winter harm without causing greasiness and clumps. These fabrics also keep strands from getting frizzy and puffy all the time. Retain moisture with satin-lined hats or scarves anytime you’re outside in the cold. It’s not only more comfortable than cotton but also assists with hydration. When you sleep on cotton pillowcases, it is known to dry out your hair from root to tips and hold on to bad bacteria. Invest in a good satin pillowcase and keep your crown on point at all times, even when you’re asleep.
Lock in the Moisture
It's all about keeping the moisture in your hair and making sure you have lots of it. But sometimes, your hair is undoubtedly thirsty, no matter how many hydrating hair masks you try to penetrate into your scalp. If you tend to wash your hair throughout the week, it's imperative to lock in that moisture so you can stretch your style and keep your hair protected from breakage. The L.O.C. method is a simple styling technique that's all about layering your products in a specific order to get hydrated, super-defined curls and coils. It's a pretty straightforward acronym: "L" for leave-in, "O" for oil, and "C" for cream. The L.O.C. method is designed to help your hair retain moisture, so it doesn't dry out as much, which is essential in those colder months. It's perfect for people who are looking to add some extra T.L.C. to their hair care routine and keep strands from quenching.
Tender Loving Care
Speaking of TLC, there's nothing more important for when your hair is feeling vulnerable than to show it some more love when it needs it the most. Those cold months of uncertainty can showcase a difficult road ahead for your hair, and while it can be a daunting task getting your curls to cooperate, it's not impossible. With some time, thought, and a great selection of products that work for your hair type, you have a real shot of restoring your curls to flourishing hydration. Protect your natural curls at all costs and watch those healthy strands grow. Having a hair regimen that you can maintain is just the beginning of embracing your beautiful crown. Try not to get discouraged or overwhelmed by the process and do what works for you.
Drink More Water
It's not said quite enough how what goes into your body is just as important as what goes into your hair. Drinking water helps hair health by preventing a long list of hair problems. From dryness to growth, shine, and more, it's the true hair secret that many tend to forget about. Drinking enough water keeps your hair hydrated, scalp moisture with natural oils, and increases the overall look and health of your textured crown. As such, one can truly avoid hair loss, hair fall, dry hair, brittle hair, and itchiness by getting in your average dose of H2O. It's the easiest way to keep your hair remaining hydrated and healthy by having the correct amount of water in the diet.
Healthier Diet
Just like the importance of drinking enough water, a healthy diet can help your hair gain the strength and shine that you've always desired. What you eat can also keep you from losing your locks which is imperative in the drop of temperature when your body needs those extra nutrients. If you're not getting certain benefits from food, you might see the effects on your hair. Essential fatty acids, especially omega-3s, play a key role in the health of your strands.
Drop below what you have been focusing on this winter during your healthy hair care routine!
]]>First, we recommend creating a regimen and staying consistent with it. There are a few things to consider when developing your regimen:
If you are looking for tips on how to build a regimen in more detail, check out our blog post on achieving your hair growth goals. Don’t worry, developing a regimen is the easy part. Staying consistent can be the hardest part. Sometimes, we try a product once or twice but do not keep up to begin or continue to see results. Reward yourself or take progress pictures as motivation.
The second way to simplify haircare is by identifying your go-to styles. Our favorites are braids and wigs. While using braids, you are able to wash, moisturize, and maintain your hair.
Wigs on the other hand are a little more high maintenance, as you have to take care of your hair as well as the wig. However, if you know how to apply and remove your wig correctly, you should be able to use this as a go-to style option. Alternatively, if you prefer to wear your natural hair out, there are many cute styles that can be achieved, we just recommend keeping your ends tucked away, as they are the oldest parts of your hair.
Third, preparing your hair products is highly recommended. This means mixing your deep conditioners, protein treatments, henna/cassia treatments around a day in advance. Keep in mind that some treatments go bad at a certain point, so know those limits. For example, when preparing rice water, you can set it out 24 hours before use. Add an orange peel to improve the smell. I would not recommend leaving it out for longer than 48-72 hours without use.
Last, protect your hair as if your life depended on it. Don’t sleep on satin bonnets -- no pun intended. Our reversible, adjustable satin bonnets are the perfect addition to your night routine. It helps retain moisture, preserve styles, and reduce split ends.
Here’s to being simple naturals that would like wash day to be under 4 hours! 🥂

]]>There are three porosity types: low, medium and high. Low porosity hair does not easily accept moisture into the shaft, but when in, it does hold a little better than high porosity because the cuticles are flat and closed. So one of the goals for people with low hair porosity is to open their hair cuticles and seal it to retain moisture -- which aids in hair growth. Medium or Normal porosity hair easily permits and retains moisture. How lucky are the people who have this type of hair? Their hair cuticle is slightly open enough to receive and retain moisture. In order for medium porosity hair to maintain this is to avoid products, dyes, and heat that can possibly damage the hair. Last, high porosity hair easily allows moisture into the hair, but it also leaves quickly. This is due to the cuticle being raised and open. Need help finding out your porosity? Two easy ways to test your porosity are our Porosity Quiz and ‘the water test.’ The water test consists of taking a clean, dry strand of your hair and dropping it into a glass of water. Low porosity hair will float at the top of the water. Medium porosity will float and sink slowly to the middle of the water. High porosity will sink to the bottom.
The first couple things I suggest for low porosity hair is to learn your hair’s favorite products and solidify a regimen that you will stick to. This greatly affects your hair growth. Remember, consistency drives results. This blog will help you find a system that works best for you and your hair. Let’s start with the day that every natural tends to dread.. Wash Day! Use a clarifying shampoo or bentonite clay to remove build up and oils. Low porosity hair is more susceptible to build up especially when the moisture is locked in! It is best to rinse with warm water to open the cuticle. Next, pick your hair’s favorite protein-free conditioner and heat it up before using. Trust me, your hair will thank you. For low porosity hair, the name of the game is opening the cuticle to get the moisture in! Next, deep conditioning with heat is your best friend. Yes, I said it. Apply your deep conditioner in the shower and using our deep conditioning heat cap, allow the product to penetrate your follicles for approximately 30 minutes. Another thing to do is the LCO method. This involves spritzing your hair with Leave-In Conditioner or Liquid (water), followed by your hair’s favorite cream, then sealing with a lightweight oil. A common misconception is that coconut oil or castor oil is a natural’s best friend. For low porosity hair, these oils are too heavy. It will not permit coconut oil or any other heavy oils because the cuticle is flat and nearly closed, so it requires lighter oils to permeate. The lighter oils I recommend are avocado, almond, grapeseed, argan, baobab, and safflower. Repeat the LCO method when your hair begins to feel dry and dull and steam to help open the cuticle during the days/weeks you’re not washing. This regimen will help your low porosity hair grow longer and stronger. But keep reading this blog as there will be a few more tips that everyone who wants to grow their hair, regardless of porosity, should know!
As someone with high porosity hair, it has been a journey trying to keep my hair moisturized. One day it feels silk, smooth and moisturized, the next it’s dry and breaking. However, I believe that the biggest improvement I could have made in my natural hair journey is being consistent! When I did not wash or moisturize consistently, I would notice my hair breaking a lot more. By not being consistent, in a year, instead of growing 6 inches (hair grows about ½ an inch per month), I lost approximately 3 or 4. First, I recommend keeping your hair products in a fridge or beauty cooler. Since high porosity hair’s cuticle is already open, cool/cold water helps seal up the moisture we infuse. This means that when washing our hair, we want to avoid hot water. Pick your hair’s favorite shampoo and conditioner and wash/rinse with cool or cold water. This will help close the cuticle. In addition to this, using an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse will aid in closing the cuticle. When deep conditioning, we do not necessarily need to use heat, but if you choose to, do it for 10-15 minutes. I also highly recommend protein treatments. I started on rice water a while ago and did not keep up with it, but it definitely is a game changer. My hair felt stronger and I saw less breakage, which contributed to length retention/growth. On to moisturizing! I personally think that the LOC method is the better bet for highly porous hair. This involves spritzing with a Leave-In Conditioner/liquid (water), followed by an oil, and cream. Heavier oils are better for high porosity, this includes coconut oil, castor oil, and jojoba oil.
I did not add a normal porosity section because this type of hair is very low maintenance. People with normal porosity hair can work out a simple regimen but keep these next few tips in mind.
Avoid heat as much as possible. And when I say heat, I am referring to flat irons and curling irons. These things damage your hair. If you can avoid it, definitely do so.
Trim your hair as needed. I have heard so many different recommendations on the frequency of trimming. Some people say every year, some say every few months, so I believe you should listen to your hair! If you’re seeing split ends and breakage, consider a trim.
Try keeping your hair in a protective style where your ends are put away. The ends of your hair are the oldest parts, so they need more care.
Find a 100% satin bonnet that protects your hair and helps retain moisture. Some bonnets are not 100% satin so they are not doing much protecting, but with our 100% charmeuse satin bonnets, the Glow Squad has seen much improvement in their hair.
Healthy diets and vitamins are important. What you put in your body will reflect on the outside. Ensure you’re taking Biotin, MSM paired with Vitamin C and getting Vitamin D straight from the source. Personally, I take prenatal vitamins, as the daily vitamins I need are in there. I also recommend teas with herbs that are good for hair growth, such as nettle.
Consider henna or cassia treatments. Especially for high porosity hair. Henna and cassia help fill in the gaps your strands have. However, keep in mind that henna might dye your hair a reddish color. So if you are looking for the benefits of henna without the dye effect, I recommend cassia.
Be consistent and positive. The more you neglect your hair, the more it will break. However, the more you show TLC to your hair, the more it shows you that it appreciates what you’re doing.
Deep Conditioning
If you have been following us on Instagram and reading our blog closely, you know that deep conditioning is one of our top priorities. Hair experts and gurus highly recommend deep conditioning with heat, especially for those with low porosity. Hair porosity is your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. (Take our porosity quiz to find out your porosity.) Why spend hours deep conditioning with a plastic cap instead of reaping the benefits of our cordless deep conditioning heat cap in 20-30 minutes? This not only allows you to carry on with wash day, but it makes room for additional tasks you are not able to do while deep conditioning without the cap.
Preparation is KEY
If you are a DIY naturalista, we recommend preparing your concoctions in bulk for the month or week, if possible. Most mixtures can be stored in the fridge or freezer for a certain period of time. For example, this African Black Soap Shampoo can last for a month in the fridge.
Whereas the moisturizing conditioner should be used within a day or two. This means while you're preparing dinner, you can prepare your concoctions in advanced to also allow the ingredients to fuse together.
Styling
Styling your hair can be the hardest part of wash day, especially for my 4c girls! Whether you are doing flat twists, braids, wig styles, etc., you can benefit from using a hooded dryer attachment to dry your hair and lock your style in place. If you are looking to wear your curls natural and free, this tool is great to set and style quickly and evenly. Drying with the hooded dryer attachment can give your curl pattern more definition without stripping the moisture. If you are looking to dry your hair for twist outs or braid outs, trying this. You know that feeling you get when you take out your twists before they're dry and you just knew that they were not dry? That won't happen here! The dryer attachment can be a great addition to your wash day as it can help finalize your styles!

TAKE THE MATCH THE WOMEN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED HAIR CARE QUIZ
]]>With the COVID-19 pandemic shuttering the doors of many hair salons across the nation, millions of us have had to tap into our inner hairstylist. No longer being able to book an appointment on a whim has left many of us experimenting with hair tools, products, and styles in an effort to maintain healthy, hydrated tresses. But relying on at-home hair maintenance for months on end can be challenging (and to be honest, exhausting). This especially rings true for those with curly and coily hair, which requires extra TLC.
Enter: Glow by Daye—a haircare brand featuring satin bonnets, shower caps, deep conditioning heat caps, and soft hood dryer attachments designed to make caring for natural hair less daunting. The founder, Ranay Daye, started the brand to address the common dilemmas she and other people with textured hair faced.
“Whether I had a twist out, braids, or my "go-to" bun, the satin bonnets that I would frequently buy from my local beauty supply always fell short because they were thin, ratty, and usually wound up off my head in the morning,” Daye says. “The notion to have a high-quality bonnet that was made for varying hair sizes, didn’t snag my hair, and was gentle on my edges inspired me to start to Glow by Daye. It started off three years ago with my ideal version of a satin bonnet and we have grown into other products reinvented for those with beautifully textured hair and versatile styles in mind.”
For Daye, offering an elevated and better-performing take on the products she used to frequently pick up at beauty supply stores is her mission. By making thoughtful fabric and functionality choices, Daye has been able to curate a line of products that deep condition the hair more effectively, increase moisture retention, and better preserve protective hairstyles. “We like to think of all our products as intentionally designed and start with the purpose of making a high-quality product that is affordable,” Daye says.
“We like to always ask the question of ‘How can this be better for us and our needs?’”
During the coronavirus pandemic, Glow by Daye is focused more than ever on helping women care for their hair. “In this very different time, haircare maintenance at home has been our only resolution, so keeping up with a routine is key, no matter what that might've looked like before the world shut down,” Daye tells us. “We want to serve our community with products that make your life easier when it comes to at-home hair maintenance.”

If you keep in mind these 3 MISSIONS, it will help you think about everything you put on or do to your hair during these “hair” vulnerable months. They will help to preserve those strands keeping them strong, healthy and continue to thrive. Keep in mind, they all go hand and hand and working on one will inevitably help the others in some way.
Our first mission is to reduce the amount your hair is breaking. One of the main reasons for hair breakage is that the strand is weak and dry.
RETAIN MOISTURE
Like mentioned before, these 3 staples go hand and hand so retaining moisture is another key that you want to remember during this time. Retaining moisture is always important for those with curly, coily, kinky hair but in the winter months it tends to be that much more challenging. Try these easy tips to help keep that moisture locked into your cuticle and nourishing your hair.
